Retaining Wall Tier and Slope Planner

Enter slope height and distance to see how many tiers may suit the grade, how far apart to space them and how wide the shelves can be.

These tools give planning-level estimates from typical values and the details you enter. They are not quotes or engineering, legal or safety advice, and results depend on your actual slope, soil, water, materials and choices. Taller and loaded walls often need engineered design and permits, and local rules decide. Only a conversation and a site visit can confirm what a project needs, and we give you a written estimate before work begins.

How it works

Four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Pick a starting point

Each preset loads a typical slope and wall height.

  2. 02

    Enter the rise and run

Total height to climb and the horizontal distance it covers, in feet.

  3. 03

    Choose the wall height

Pick the tallest wall you want in each tier.

  4. 04

    Read the plan

See slope angle, tier count, shelf widths, wall face area and steps.

Tips

  • Measure the rise with a string level and a tape from the bottom to the top of the slope.
  • Shelves about twice the height of the lower wall keep tiers from loading each other.
  • We mark wall lines with paint or string at your visit.
Questions

About this tool.

Is this exact?

No. Soil, water, trees and loads change the best layout. It is a planning estimate.

Can walls be taller than four feet?

Taller walls usually need engineered design and permits, and local rules decide.

What if the shelves do not fit?

Shorter walls, more tiers, a longer run or reinforced walls can help. We explain the options.
